December 2008

Dear Friends,

We have been meeting in homes for two years since we came back. For some time now we have been praying that the Lord would show us the right location for our church meetings and one day the Lord led us to our old neighborhood and the storefront that we had rented back in 1995 was once again available. The landlady was happy to have us back, and we went right to work.

December 5th we had our opening service and we were pleased to have 52 people come to celebrate with us the return of Athens Baptist Bible Church to Neos Kosmos. Sunday morning we had one of the first time visitors join us and a few others promised to come. Click either picture for a closer look and use your browser's back button to return.

Christmas is the season that we pass out thousands of yearly devotional and calendars. James and I go to the center and it is joy to see people take these and ask for more, while we preach short messages of salvation. Unfortunately, due to the riots we have not been able to go back downtown this week, and we don’t know how long this will last.

Christmas will not be the same in Athens after the riots. The anarchists burned the city Christmas tree in Syntagma Square, many stores in the traditional Ermou St. were burned, whole buildings burnt to the top floor because the anarchist even took over the fire trucks and set them on fire as well. Though they like to make you believe that it was police violence that ignited the riots, the killing of a 15 year old boy, the truth is that this boy was one of the protesters and attackers of the police before he was shot, and he was involved in defacing the public pool in another neighborhood prior to his fall. Their hidden agenda is to bring down the government and have the Prime Minister step down. Last summer he stood up against the pyromaniacs that caused 90 deaths and half of the nation’s forests to be burnt. The Prime Minister is working on reforms for privatization as promised in the elections, and the left wing parties use this tactic to bring him down. Well, politics, politics, what we get out of this whole riot issue is that the hearts of the Greek youth are far darker than we can imagine, yet they call themselves Orthodox Christians. May God give us opportunity this year to bring them the light of the gospel that Jesus Christ was born to bring, peace to earth and to their hearts.

Laboring Together Till Jesus Comes,
